as the seasons change and the days shorten, we wave ‘goodbye’ to picnics and Pimms in the park and say ‘hello!’ to our living rooms and loungers. With winter nights fast approaching and more time spent curled up inside, it is the perfect time to consider giving your home a little more VaVa-Voom.
But where to start? Choosing an interior designer can seem like both a luxury and a daunting process. However, based in SE1, Maisha Design is a unique and intimate company which can change that view by offering out a friendly helping hand.
Almas Shamsee, originally from Kenya, is the founder and Creative Director of Maisha Design, named after the Swahili word for life. After many years working in financial services, Almas decided to pursue her real passion for interiors, studying at the prestigious Chelsea College of Art.
With an approachable manner and an understanding that hiring an interior designer is ‘a big deal’, Almas works closely with clients and team, retaining a very hands-on approach throughout every project. She personally produces mood-boards and design drawings after one or two informal consultations, then goes on to instruct and supervise her builders and craftspeople until the project is complete.
For Almas, “luxury, elegance and relaxation” are paramount. She also pays particular attention to lighting, an element which can often be overlooked, yet is incredibly “important to open out a space.” Almas and her team source much of their own material, and are now beginning to even manufacture their own kitchens, guaranteeing absolute individuality in every room.
So, this year, rather than spending November prematurely pondering about how you will decorate your Christmas tree, why not start with the room itself?
