‘Thrift’, the challenge to the future of production

the results of this years Designers in Residence programme at the Design Museum are surely dear to everyones’ hearts at the moment. ‘Thrift’ asked each of the emerging talents to explore themes of economy and resourcefulness in an object, an environment or an experience.

FREYJA SEWELL
Freya has imaginatively worked with wool fibres that are a by-product of the British carpet industry and has used it to create a variety of furniture designs with stunning effect. As a graduate in 3D Design from Brighton University, Freyja recently cofounded Studio Sudi and her wool designs were selected as a ‘Green Hero’ at Grand Designs Live 2011.

OSCAR MEDLEY-WHITFIELD AND HARRY TRIMBLE
Oscar and Harry’s work is inspired Southwark’s historic and once thriving ceramics industry, drawing from the unused resources of Thames river clay to make a range of products that revive the history of ceramics in the area surrounding the Design Museum. These two graduated from Kingston University and the University of Brighton respectively and are currently in the process of forming a design studio, Studio Extract. They both love sourcing local materials to create their work.

LAWRENCE LEK
Lawrence is a sculptor, industrial designer and architect who explores the processes of natural growth and industrial fabrication through objects and places. Born in Frankfurt to Malaysian-Chinese parents, Lawrence studied at Cambridge and the Architectural Association who’s work has been exhibited in Japan, New York and London at the ICA and The Roundhouse.

YURI SUZUKI
Yuri Suzuki will be conducting a series of workshops to show the concept of ‘how things work’ in the world of sound, design and electronics. The impenetrable, sleek exteriors of our current electronic products make them difficult to repair encouraging a disposable culture where consumers are more inclined to purchase new products as opposed to repairing the old. Born in Tokyo, Yuri studied at the Royal College of Art and after his graduation in 2008 opened his own studio in London.

THE FUTURE
As part of the residency, the designers will be delivering a range of learning activities and talks as well as helping curate the museum’s late night openings. You can look online for further details throughout the season (www.designmuseum.org).

The Design Museum is the world’s leading museum devoted to architecture and industrial design and is the definitive voice of contemporary design in the UK. Founded in 1989 and currently located in Shad Thames, its work encompasses all elements of design, including product design, graphic design, and fashion. By 2014 the Design Museum intends to relocate from its current home at Shad Thames to the former Commonwealth Institute building, in Kensington, West London and will be sorely missed when it goes.

‘Thrift’ was at the Design Museum from September 2012 – January 2013
