Summer GLOW

The alternative ways of getting that healthy summer-look by Lily Niu

Summer 2014 London Suntan Skincare

with summer finally upon us, visions of sun, sand and the beach are an even more tantalising daydream for those in the city. To make the most of this year’s London summer, we’re all no doubt keen to spend as much time in the sun as possible and bring home a dewy, glowing tan.

But what does science say about the effects of sun on skin? Whilst it’s commonly known a good dose of direct sunlight treats the body to its much needed source of Vitamin D, the nourishment received is actually imperative to helping us absorb calcium and phosphorous from our diets – these are essential for strong healthy bones. Spending too much time in the sun however, particularly during peak times (12-3pm), puts you at higher risk of sunburn and over a prolonged period of time, can age the skin and also increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Sunscreen is not only recommended but a complete necessity. Fair skinned individuals are advised to use a sunscreen of SPF 45+, since it allows several hours out in the sun before reapplication is needed. After swimming, another application is needed.

“what does science say about the effects of sun on skin?

For your skin to tan healthily, short exposure to sun (with sunscreen, of course) over a gradual period of time works best. For those who prefer tanning via sun beds, same rules apply – UV rays from natural sunlight and sun beds are harmful and tanning via sun beds should be done slowly. Depending on how fair or sensitive your skin is, experts recommend leaving 24-48 hours between each session and to avoid sunbathing entirely on the same days as having one.

An alternative option is spray tanning; popular for being low risk and generally a lot cheaper than sun beds. Easy to carry out at home with self tan products as well as professionally with a simple trip to the salon, spray tanning is completely safe for the skin. With faster effects than applying gradual tanning gels and lotions, sprays tans provide a smoother and more even result. However, the spray tan itself does not offer protection against the sun and sunscreen is still required when outdoors. Another drawback is the short length of time a spray tan usually lasts, which is between 3-7 days. Additionally, it’s key that you thoroughly exfoliate your skin prior to spray tanning.

Whatever your preferred method of getting that dazzling summer glow, remember that sunscreen will go a long way in keeping your skin healthy and beautiful!
