YOU STOLE My Heart

our Summer poem comes from Rachel Piercy, a student of Roddy Lumsden’s travelling workshop ‘Here and There and Now’, which focuses on developments in contemporary poetry in the UK and the US over the past decade. Rachel’s poem ‘Magpie’ was inspired by the artwork ‘You Stole My Heart’ by Adam Bridgland.

Mapgie

It didn’t glitter, but I took it.
Really, we like anything
unshelled or precious
and you make things so easy
being superstitious.
It leaves your heart right open.
If we thought your way,
we couldn’t bear to be alone.
The things you trust!
For all your glut of knowledge
you go with the twist in your gut.

Don’t misunderstand me;
we like it when you count us,
and we’re tricksters,
and we’ll swipe your loose stuff
while you’re fussing
to find more than one
of our half-glossy,
half-raffish bodies.

You should have been
more jealous of your heart.
It’s a beating ruby in my nest
and of all my treasures
its fluttering messages
are the easiest to get.

Don’t fret. It doesn’t really
take seven of us
to keep a secret.
