High-Flying Students

Girls at St Saviour's and St Olave's have more than their fair share of opportunities, both academically and for full, joyful lives.

The school’s ten House Captains, who had all worked extremely hard coordinating the Christmas Gift Appeal, the summer Sports Day as well as being constant ‘big sisters’ all year round were invited to pilot a glider at the Lasham Airfield in Surrey.

The weather was definitely in their favour with wall to wall blue sky as the students took turns in the skies with a qualified pilot who let each girl take the controls. Tethers were disconnected and the unbridled joy of gliding peacefully above the Surrey countryside became a once in a lifetime experience for all.

“I felt very confident in myself
which led me to volunteer to be the first to fly

Isha Kamara, one of the students who flew that day described her experience: “At first I was very scared about being inside the glider and controlling it. However, after being through the instructions and safety procedures I felt very confident in myself which led me to volunteer to be the first to fly. Being in the air was amazing. The glider is very sensitive so when being in control I had to concentrate and look around me to see if the wings were levelled.”

The annual event is subsidised by the Worshipful Company of Dyers who continue to give generously to the school.

The school continues to by rated by Ofsted as Outstanding and provides exceptional academic and character building educational pathways. Regularly engaged in local community events, charity work as well as out of London adventure and enhancement activities all contribute to the school’s success since its origins in 1582.
