Spring 2016

Dear Readers

“Say Cheese!”

An exhibition on the Southbank highlights just how modern technology has crept into all of our lives. Even photography, the once radical threat to the art of painting, has recently undergone its own transformation now that we all have high quality cameras embedded into our phones. It is now possible (almost mandatory) to snap moments of our mundane and private lives revealing something about the way we live today. The ‘Selfie’, or more specifically how photography and performance overlap, is explored in ‘Performing for the Camera’ at Tate Modern until June.

If you are so inclined, send us your own selfies with interesting local backdrops or contexts to info@therivermagazine.co.uk and we will print any fun or especially interesting ones in our summer edition this June.

With the arrival of Spring there is more reason to enjoy life outdoors so we have looked ahead at cultural festivals across the country during the coming warm months so, should you wish to escape the city for a weekend, you may find some ideas in this issue.

We have also taken a look down Brick Lane, its history, food stalls, vintage fashion and a mish-mash of East London culture. Read on…

Yours

Angela Webb
