Jewellery to Keep FOREVER

Mildred Jones: Breathing life and meaning into precious stones and antique jewellery

Mildred Jones Handmade Custom Jewellery London

there are few investments you can make that benefit you every day. Once you have secured your property most other investments are distant or abstract concepts like stocks and shares – even fine wine can’t be appreciated without draining the asset of its value!

If you buy shares in gold, or even gold nuggets, the likelihood is that it will be stored somewhere safe; out of sight, out of mind and out of reach. The pleasure you get from it might be an occasional warm glow but it’s not quite the same reward that you get from wearing it.

It’s out of this conundrum that Mildred Jones was born, the alter-ego of Susie Jones – local resident and lover of exquisite antique jewellery. Susie says, “I love fine jewellery and diamonds, but not pieces that have to be locked away in a safe.”

The new designer jewellery brand offers both ready-to-wear and personalised fine jewellery, as well as a refurbishment service to rejuvenate old pieces that may have lost their shine over time.

“If you have ever inherited a piece of jewellery that has a style that doesn’t suit you or isn’t in fashion, don’t just put it away and feel guilty about it!” says Susie. “With some creative thinking and quality craftsmanship, the piece can be re-made into a new item that you can love and wear comfortably everyday. Fine jewellery can be transformed from impractical, albeit sentimental, heirlooms into a gift with fresh emotional value that can be enjoyed whilst retaining the feel of the original. An investment that is far more meaningful than numbers on a bank statement.”

“I love fine jewellery and diamonds, but not pieces that have to be locked away in a safe

Susie Jones has lived in Lambeth and Southwark most of her life. She recently left her City-based career in Law to pursue her passion after she became a mother. “The idea for Mildred Jones Fine Jewellery came after the birth of my baby boy. I wanted to invest in a gold pendant to celebrate his birth, and looked everywhere for something unique and of a high enough quality to last forever.

“I had no joy, so I decided to design my own and get it made. The Mildred Jones Celebration Pendant was the result, and the reaction I got from friends and even strangers was so positive that I decided to take the leap into setting up my own collection.”

Her flagship range comprises the Mildred Jones Celebration Pendant (18ct yellow gold), the asymmetric, rose cut Sapphire Earring Drops (18ct white gold) and the Mildred Jones Gypsy Ring, a heavy-weight ring (yellow, white or rose gold) with any combination of gemstones.

Largely self-taught, Susie has been collecting and designing jewellery in her own time for years. The process of ‘up-cycling’ antique pieces begins with a consultation that is followed by hand-drawn designs for modernisation, before the crafting work begins – carried out by a traditionally-trained London Goldsmith. The end result is a stunning remodelling and personalisation of beautiful antique objects that have a meaning and value to last well into the future.
