Ticket ‘DESIRE’

by Owen Rice

the reputed ‘masterclass’ production of Tennessee Williams’ Streetcar Named Desire, currently running at the Young Vic, looks set to be this years biggest theatrical event in Lambeth and Southwark.

The star studded production (including Gillian Anderson as Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster as Stanley Kowalski and Vanessa Kirby as Stella Kowalski) has breathed steamy life into a modern literary great and packed out the Young Vic during its run from 28 July, closing on 19 September. With every seat sold out well in advance, it’s clearly a production that could have run for longer, or filled a bigger theatre.

For those theatre-buffs who weren’t lucky enough to get tickets, the Young Vic is holding a daily lottery for seats at 5pm each day and names are drawn out of the hat at 5.30pm with all tickets £20 and a £10 concession for under 26s. There is also a matinee lottery running at 1pm too so if you are not tied to a desk at those times you may still get a chance to see the live performance.

Otherwise on the 16 September at 7pm the play is being broadcast by National Theatre Live to over 1,100 venues in over 40 different countries around the world. Recently, having seen two such broadcasts I can vouch for the authenticity of the experience; within days it’s easy to begin believing that you were actually watching live, so don’t miss out – looks like this is shaping up as the hottest, steamiest and most desirable show of the year.
