Talking to THE SUN

Poetry Workshop

Poetry School Lambeth London Classroom Workshop

during July’s heatwave, The Poetry School held a week of writing workshops named ‘A True Account of Talking to the Sun’. Luckily, the scorching heat ensured the name was apt! The Poetry School runs regular evening classes all year round, but in the Summer they organised a selection of daytime ‘tasters’ – short and sweet poetry workshops to fill up writers’ notebooks with ideas to work on over the sunny months. The theme that ran through this year’s Summer School was based on holidays.

The students that were based at the Poetry School in Lambeth Walk wrote poems about Lambeth’s ‘Untourist Attractions’, with poet and artist Sophie Herxheimer, they wrote ‘Phrasebook Poems’ with Clare Pollard, ‘Postcard Poems’ with Rishi Dastidar and conducted poetry reviews with Claire Trevien. The holiday theme continued with a trip to space with Chrissy Williams, a ‘holiday from themselves’ with Jack Underwood, and to round it off, a dip in Hampstead Ponds followed by a watery poetry writing session with Anna Selby.

Although the Summer is over, The Poetry School still have plenty of creative and inspiring workshops for budding poets to discover. One example is the ‘How Free is Free’ workshop, starting in late September, which explores poems that do not rely on form and pattern. Another, entitled ‘Draft, Edit, Draft’ , which starts in October, helps students to improve their drafting and editing skills, which in turn helps them to perfect their own poetry.

Booking is now open for the new term of Poetry School activities – browse all of the courses and workshops on offer by visiting their website.
